Rubén Olvera nace en el histórico pueblo de Ysleta (El Paso, Texas), en la clínica particular del Dr. J.B. Shanley. La cual estaba localizada en la calle Old County Road. A los pocos días de nacido, es llevado a Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua donde vive toda su infancia, adolescencia y primera juventud. Etapas decisivas en su crecimiento, que sin duda dejarían una profunda huella en su sensibilidad de artista plástico fronterizo.

Ha estudiado: Economía, arquitectura, pintura, grabado, cerámica, cinematografía, fotografía e historia del arte en: The University of Texas at El Paso; The University of Texas at Arlington; La Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez; Los Ángeles Harbor Collage y el Community College de Fort Worth, Texas (TCJC).

Ha expuesto su obra en El Museo de Arte de El Paso. El Paso, Texas; Museo de arte de Ciudad Juárez; Casa Redonda Museo Chihuahuense de Arte Contemporáneo. Chihuahua, Chihuahua;  Arlington, Museum of Art. Arlington, Texas; San Antonio Institute of Texan Cultures. San Antonio, Texas; Palacio de Minería en la Ciudad de México . También ha expuesto en la ciudades de Dallas y  Fort Worth, Texas; Dresden, Alemania, en la embajada de EE.UU., en El Cairo, Egipto, el Festival Cervantino en Guanajuato y en el Rubin Center for the Visual Arts. UTEP. El Paso, Texas.

A los 9 años de edad (en Juárez), forma parte de un grupo de teatro de marionetas; las funciones se llevaban a cabo en el patio de su casa. A los 12 años de edad (en Juárez), forma una banda de rock infantil junto con sus amigos del barrio e interpretan las canciones de moda de esos años (1968 -1969). En 1979, empieza a trabajar en las oficinas de ingenieros y arquitectos, donde descubre su facilidad para el dibujo. 

"No creo en las modas en el arte que a veces dictan el mercado y algunos centros neurálgicos del arte. Esto, creo yo, destruye al verdadero artista. El artista debe seguir siempre los llamados de su sensibilidad".

"Yo no se si el arte esta hecho para comprenderse, no se si el arte se pueda comprender.  Yo mismo no me comprendo; por eso pinto, por eso hago grabado, para tratar de comprenderme y para saber quien soy".  Ruben Olvera.

Ruben Olvera was born in the historic town of Old Ysleta (El Paso, Texas),  in the private clinic of Dr. J.B. Shanley, which was located on Old County Road. A few days after he was born, he was taken to Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua where he spent his entire childhood, adolescence and early youth. Decisive stages in his growth, which would undoubtedly leave a deep mark on his sensibility as a border artist.

He has studied, Economics, architecture, painting, printmaking, ceramics, cinematography, photography and art history, at The University of Texas at El Paso; The University of Texas at Arlington; La Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez; Los Angeles Harbor College and Fort Worth  Community College (TCJC).

He has exhibited his work at the El Paso Museum of Art; Museo de Arte de Ciudad Juarez; Casa Redonda Museo Chihuahuense de Arte Contemporáneo. Chihuahua, Chihuahua; Arlington Museum of Art. Arlington, Texas;  San Antonio Institute of Texan Cultures. San Antonio, Texas; Palacio de Mineria in Mexico City. He has also exhibited in the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas; Dresden, Germany, the U.S., embassy in Cairo, Egypt, the Festival Cervantino in Guanajuato, Mexico and at the Rubin Center for the Visual Arts. At the age of 9 (in Juarez), he is part of a string puppet theater group; the shows were carried out in the patio of his house. At the age of 12 (in Juarez), he forms a children's rock band together with his friends from the neighborhood and they played the fashionable songs of those years (1968 and 1969). In 1979, he began to work in offices of engineers and architects, where he discovered his abilities for drawing.

"I do not believe in the trends in art that are sometimes dictated by the market and some relevant centers of art. This, I believe, destroys the true artist. The artist must always follow the calls of their sensibilities".

"I don't know if art is made for the purpose of being comprehended, I don't know if art can be understood. I don't even understand myself; that's why I paint,  that's why I do printmaking, to try to understand myself, and to know who I am".  - Ruben Olvera.
